For most people, dressing up in a costume is only appropriate for Halloween. For cosplayers, however, far-out outfits are not just for trick-or-treating. For these costume-wearing fanboys and fangirls, any day is a good day for dressing up like their favorite characters, heroes, and heroines. The word cosplay is a combination of costume and play, and that pretty much describes what cosplayers do. They dress up in highly detailed costumes to represent specific characters from manga comics, anime, movies, and graphic novels. Faithful cosplayers even try to adopt the body language of their chosen characters. They take their roles very seriously, much like actors and actresses. Cosplay really took off in Japan in the early 1990s. Nowadays, any time there is a comic book or sci-fi convention anywhere, you can bet it will be crawling with cosplayers. The city of Nagoya, Japan, even hosts the World Cosplay Summit. There, cosplayers from up to 20 countries compete to see who has the best costume and who is representing his or her character the best. From subculture to the mainstream, cosplay has surely found its place on the world stage. |
