Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse': A Fresh Take on a Venerable Hero 英雄新詮釋 《蜘蛛人:新宇宙》

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" contains a vital element that has been missing from too many recent superhero movies: fun. Most of the better specimens of the genre, as well as the worst, assume a heavy burden of self-importance: the future of the planet, the cosmic balance of good and evil, the profit margins of multinational corporations and the good will of moody fans all depend on the actions of a gloomy character in a costume. Or a bunch of them. The alternative is an abrasive self-consciousness that pretends to be subversive but quickly turns sour and cynical. Either way, these movies can feel like a lot of work.

We can argue about that some other time. My point here is that this animated reworking of the Spidey mythos is fresh and exhilarating in a way that very few of its live-action counterparts — including the last couple of "Spider-Man" chapters — have been. Its jaunty, brightly colored inventiveness and its kid-in-the-candy-store appetite for pop culture ephemera give "Into the Spider-Verse" some of the kick of the first "Lego Movie." The responsible parties also hold onto the traits that have defined Spidey for more than 50 years. He is still a cerebral, introspective teenager from outer-borough New York, contending with existential confusions and merciless supervillains.

He isn't Peter Parker, though. Well, he is and he isn't. Playing with a conceit borrowed from theoretical physics — the hotly contested "multiverse" hypothesis — "Spider-Verse" proposes a multiplicity of web-slingers from different dimensions, all of whom converge thanks to disruption in the space-time continuum. There are a couple of Peter Parkers . Also a futuristic anime heroine with a robot spider, a cartoon pig , a black-and-white film noir avatar and a canonical Spider-Woman, aka Gwen Stacy.

The main Spider-Man, in whose universe a variation on the familiar origin story unfolds, is a Brooklyn middle schooler named Miles Morales. The son of a hospital worker and a police officer, Miles is a new transfer to an elite boarding school, where the side effects of the radioactive spider bite compound the usual humiliations and anxieties of adolescence.

主角蜘蛛人所處的宇宙,是熟悉的原始故事的變體,他是名叫邁爾斯.摩拉斯的布魯克林中學生,是醫院員工和警官的孩子。他是一所菁英寄宿學校新來的轉學生,在這裡經歷被輻射蜘蛛咬的副作用,混合慣常的屈辱感及青春期的焦慮。

Like his arachnid-bitten comrades — and with the counsel of an out of shape "Peter B. Parker" from a different dimension — Miles undergoes an initiation we have witnessed many times. He passes through stages of bewilderment, excitement and grief on his way to learning that "with great power comes great responsibility."

Beekeeper Barbie was lonely.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon in December, the foot-tall plastic doll stood on a shelf in a Walmart store in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey, perfect smile frozen in place as bustling shoppers breezed by, ignoring her and her white gloves, white hat with netting, hive and bees.

For Mattel, the 74-year-old company behind Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and American Girl, the toy business hasn't been much fun lately.

Dolls, action figures and miniature cars are competing for the attention of children, who are spending hours a day playing games on phones, tablets, computers and consoles. To make matters worse, toymakers lost a key outlet this year when Toys "R" Us shut down or sold all its stores after filing for bankruptcy.

The trouble in toyland is particularly severe for Mattel. Revenue has plunged from $6.5 billion in 2013 to a projected $4.5 billion this year, and a profit of more than $913 million has become an expected loss of $418 million. The company's stock is down 73 percent in that time and near a 10-year low.

Nonetheless, he hopes to start Mattel on a new path and will soon announce a live-action Barbie film starring Margot Robbie, the Australian actress nominated for an Oscar for "I, Tonya."

Kreiz's plans also include turning many of Mattel's other beloved brands into movies, television series and video games. In September, as part of that push, he created an in-house studio, Mattel Films, led by producer Robbie Brenner, a 2014 Oscar nominee for "Dallas Buyers Club."
